Durham Chronicle 11th September 1857
Two articles in the Durham Chronicle published on the same day:
1) John Ayre, publican of the Colliery Inn charged with assaulting a police officer on 29th August was fined £5 with costs. The magistrate (Mr Fawcett) stated "I don't think you are a proper man to keep a public-house, and it is not very probable that your licence will be renewed."
2) At the Brewster Sessions on the 9th September, John Ayre had his application for the renewal of his licence refused. On the Bench was J. Fawcett Esq.
John Ayre is listed as publican of the Colliery Inn in the PO Directory of Northumberland and Durham, published in September 1858. Either he successfully appealed his loss of licence or, more probably this section of the directory was compiled before the Brewster Session of August 1857.
