Shincliffe
Roll of Honour
1914 - 1919
The Reredos in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Shincliffe, commemorating those who gave their lives in the Great War, was originally sited behind the altar. When the church was restored after the fire in 1980, it was moved to its current position in the nave.
Nearby, a plaque hangs on a pillar. Its inscription reads:
"The reredos in this church is erected by parishioners and friends in memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War 1914 - 1919... " There follows a list of 23 names in 2 columns. Beneath the names are the words:
"Grant unto them eternal rest, O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them."
Recent research has uncovered five additional names of local men who gave their lives in World War I. All are included in the Roll of Honour here:
