Allan Love Campbell 1897- 1917

John Joseph Campbell 1892 - 1918

Allan Love Campbell was living in 6 Avenue Row (now Street) in 1911, aged fourteen. He lived there with his parents, John Isaac Love Campbell (51), and Isabella Campbell (46). In addition, there was his brother, John Joseph, five years older, sister, Ethel, aged twelve and stepsister, Catherine Johnstone, aged twenty-three. John Campbell was born in Helmington Row, between Crook and Willington. He married Isabella Newton, from Sunderland, in 1888, and in 1891 the couple can be found in Liddle Street in Cornsay Colliery. John is listed as a “Sanitary pipe glazier”. They have a daughter, Catherine Jane, born in 1887.

In 1901, the family are in Avenue Row in Shincliffe, presumably Number 6. Their neighbours are the McKeowns who would also go on to lose their son, James, in the Great War. James McKeown and Allan Campbell were contemporaries. Although Catherine had been listed as “Campbell” in 1891, she is now referred to as “Johnstone”, a stepdaughter of Mr Campbell. Isabella was still living with her parents in Sunderland in 1881. Catherine was born in Bitchburn, near Bishop Auckland and it is not clear from the records whether she was given the father’s surname or whether Isabella had married the father. She was Newton when marrying Allan’s father.

Catherine was still living with the family in Avenue Row in 1911 although now she is listed as a general servant (domestic). Allan had two other siblings, John Joseph (19) and Ethel (12) at this time. Ethel was born on 7th November 1898 and had been baptised in St. Mary’s Church in Shincliffe.

John Campbell died in June 1938 and is buried in Ropery Lane Cemetery in Chester-Le-Street. Isabella predeceased him in January of that year and is buried in the same graveyard.

Private Allan Love Campbell served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment (45th Battalion, Territorial Force). He was killed in action on 26th October 1917 in France and Flanders. He is buried in Cement House Cemetery in Belgium.

Private John Campbell joined the Northumberland Fusiliers. He died on 7th October 1918 and is buried in Ahmednagar Cemetery in India.
